With the holidays quickly approaching and thanksgiving behind us, we like to take a moment to give thanks for all we have and reflect on those we have helped along the way. The community has blessed our team with allowing us to care for so many who need hearing, tinnitus or balance help. In our way we like to “give back.”
For the last several years, instead of exchanging gifts amongst the team members, we pool our gift money to help others…breakfast bag for Meal on Wheels, financial donation to Samaritan Purse, gift cards to Hearing Solutions family members who need a little financial support, Christmas wreaths for our veterans at the National Cemetery.
Our “give back” does not only happen at holiday time. We have donated to Saving Grace Farm, purchased fleece blankets for Terrie Hess Child Advocacy Center, provided a hearing screener and yearly equipment calibration to Community Care Clinic of Rowan County, and sponsored the Health & Fitness Day at Rufty Holmes Senior Center.
We are also a qualified audiology clinic for Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as well as Independent Living and Vocational Rehabilitation. These programs are state funded providing hearing aids to those who meet financial standards with greater than a moderate hearing loss. We have also “gifted” many sets of refurbished hearing aids to patients who do not qualify for state funded assistance and can not afford to purchase new technology.
Beyond our local support, we are a proud sponsor of Hearing the Call. Hearing the Call is a qualified 501c3 charitable organization, bringing hope and healing to people who are hard of hearing. In our office we donate to Hearing the Call in honor of every Hearing Solutions family member who invests in hearing rehabilitation. Hearing the Call has helped over 19,000 people in twenty-two states and sixteen countries.
You may remember several years ago, Jane and I traveled to Turks & Caicos, with Hearing the Call, to evaluate the hearing of all the children in South Caicos and assess the special needs children of Providenciales. The experience was truly amazing for both of us.
Last month Dr. Mussler filled her heart in Guatemala. The population of Guatemala continues to grow, but the number of audiologists in the country does not. In a country of seventeen million people, most have little or no access to any hearing healthcare. With education resources being limited, kids who have hearing impairment can get forced out of school. Hearing the Call has been in Guatemala since February 2015 and works in three areas, Panajachel, Nuevo Progreso and Petén. The program in Guatemala is a training program in hopes that Hearing the Call services will not be needed in the future.
Be sure to ask Dr. Mussler about her trip. She posted many videos on our Facebook and Instagram page so be sure to check them out.
